My dear Friend Elisa Mason's daughter, Carrie, told me she was engaged when I first met her at one of Elisa's art openings. While we were talking, I asked her if she had taken engagement photos yet, and if she hadn't, if she would be interested in me taking them. She instantly accepted on the spot! Elisa had given me a bit of backstory after Carrie said yes.
Elisa: These two grew up together. They've known each other since before they were born. Zakary's mother and I are great friends. They both grew up in New Orleans and Mississippi. These kids... they're the greatest!
Young and in love. One of the greatest feelings, and these kids had it. They're each other's best friend, and that's what people strive for in a relationship.
Where did you go on your first date?
Carrie: For our first date we went to try and see The Grand Budapest Hotel at Canal Place. Sadly I couldn't get in because the theater was 18+. Zakary was already 18 because his birthday is three weeks earlier than mine so we got turned away because I was still 17. So instead of the movie we went to Popeye's and walked along the river.
When did he propose?
Before he proposed Zakary and I went through a rough patch in our relationship. I ended up getting depressed and breaking up, but Zakary didn't give up on me and we got back together by the end of the month. I was still damaged, but Zakary was patient. One night over our Christmas break we were at my dad's house in Mississippi. We were talking about everything that happened and the next thing I knew Zakary was getting out of bed. I asked him what he was doing because it was almost four in the morning. He turned on the light and told me to get out of bed. I did and the next thing I know he's down on one knee and told me that he couldn't live without me and asked me to marry him. I, of course, said yes.
How is your relationship unique?
Our friends call us the "most patient and resilient couple they've ever met" because no matter what's gone on we've always stuck by each other.
What are your favorite things to do together?
We both like going on road trips, relaxing at cafes, watching horror movies, playing video games, and go to concerts together.
Do you have anything in common, or do you have things that you cannot agree on?
For a long time it felt like our lives were very parallel of each other. Both our parents were artists, we both had lived on farms, and both of us were somewhat socially awkward until we got to college (Zakary more than me...he was home schooled). Neither of us can thing of something we cannot agree upon because usually we try to find the middle ground in everything.
Do you have any pets? What are their names?
We have a large (20 lbs) black cat named PJ. He has really bad anxiety.
What do you love most about him/her?
Carrie: First of all I love Zakary's ridiculous sense of humor. He makes so many really bad puns and jokes it's hard not to laugh. Secondly I love how confident he is in me, he's never given up on me and I know he never will. He makes me feel stronger when life gets tough.
Zakary: What I love about Carrie is her beautiful smile and her impeccable charisma. It's really hard for me to pin certain things down because I just love all of her.
